A host of new players will enter the Bath Rugby Senior Academy in 2015/16, with four forwards and two backs comprising the new cohort.
Number eight Zach Mercer (Merchiston Castle) has played for England U18, and is the son of former New Zealand rugby league international Gary Mercer. Coming in alongside Zach in the back row is openside flanker Sid Blackmore, who captained Hartpury College in their recent AASE Final victory against England U18 hooker Dan Frost's Filton College. Both players will join a loan club for the start of the 2015/16 season. Frost's fellow England U18 front row representative, prop Jack Edmondson (Sherborne) will be part of the Bath University Scholar programme.
Coming into the backs are Old Millfieldians Darren Atkinsand Adam Hastings. Fullback Atkins, who has also represented England U18, touched down on several occasions for Bath United last season. Hastings, son of rugby great Gavin, has represented Scotland U19 at fly-half.
"We are delighted that these boys have signed with Bath Rugby and look forward to welcoming them into our Senior Academy group as they start pre-season this week," said George Tavner, Assistant Academy Manager. "All six represented Bath U18 last season and have graduated from the Junior Academy, and they have benefited from being part of outstanding school and college programmes as well."
"We are very grateful for the work these institutes have put in in developing these players alongside the Bath Rugby Academy. They are a talented group with huge potential and we are looking forward to seeing how they develop in the Farleigh environment."
