Beechen Cliff bring down Exeter college in eight-try win

17 October 2019

Beechen Cliff School blasted their way into the AASE League play-offs with a 52-0 win over Exeter College yesterday, with fixtures against Brooksby Melton College, Gosforth College and Exeter College, who respectively came 4th in the Southern group.

Sscores from Will Morris, Archie Alexander, Orlando Bailey, Ollie de Glanville, Jasper Spandler, Gabe Goss and a brace from Frankie Read sent Beechen Cliff clear and into Pool A of the Division One play-offs.

Beechen created the first opportunity through good Support play, defensive resilience and creativity in a counter attack lead by Orlando Bailey and Frankie Read. Beechen and Bath Academy players Archie Stanley, Jasper Spandler and Will Morris all contributed to a good team play, getting Beechen on the scoreboard again.

Beechen’s variety in attack kept the visitors guessing, providing opportunities for Archie Alexander, Orlando Bailey , Ollie De Glanville and Jasper Spandler to cross the white wash giving the home team a 33-0 lead at half time.

After the break, Exeter started to get a foot hold into the game, building pressure in Beechen’s half but the hosts compiled pressure at set piece and showcasing a strong defensive spirit, winning the ball back scoring a end to end try with 12 different players having had a hand in the try.

This deflated the visitors, creating space for Frankie Read to score two more and Gabe Goss to wrap things up.

Beechen have a two week break to regroup before playing the play-offs and Pathway Coach, Ryan Davis commented on the sides positive display: ”It’s always a tough encounter with Exeter College, a physical battle and forward orientated game but I’m really pleased with how the boys expressed themselves today but more importantly how the players learnt and to right the wrongs against St Pauls.

"It took 15/20 mins to breakdown Exeter, who carried especially well, causing us issues at the breakdown but after some large defensive passages, the game began to open up and all that defensive pressure was turned into attacking opportunities”.
