Bath Rugby Academy player play pivotal role in England U18 victory

15 April 2019

Two tries from Bath Rugby’s Orlando Bailey and a try from John Stewart helped England U18s to a 38-20 victory over Wales at Gillman's Ground in the first game of the U18 Six Nations Festival on Saturday.

Nahum Merigan, Ewan Richards and George Worboys were also part of the five-strong Bath Rugby contingent that helped England start their campaign in style.

Tom Curtis put England ahead early into the match before Ed Dunford drew his side level with 15 minutes on the clock. [3-3]

Bailey crossed for the hosts first score of the afternoon, darting his way through the Wales defence, and drifting past the last man to dive his way over. Curtis added the extras. [10-3]

Wales hit back with a converted try of their own to make it all square on the scoreboard. [10-10]

Some strong forward work set up Joe Browning for England’s next try. Deep inside the Wales 22, Curtis threw a long, looping pass to the winger to take his side back in front. [17-10]

Bailey picked up his second of the afternoon on the stroke of half-time. George Martin powered into the Welsh defence before releasing Bailey clear. The inside centre navigated his way through the Welsh defence, Curtis extended his sides lead to 14 going into the break. [24-10]

Half-time - England U18s 24-10 Wales U18s

A sniping run and score from Raphael Quirke after the break and successful conversion from Curtis took England into a comfortable lead before Wales hit back through Dylan Davies. [31-15]

Stewart showed his strength bundling his way over for England’s final score of the match. Mason Grady went over for a consolation try for the visitors late on. [38-20]

Full-time - England U18s 38-20 Wales U18s

England next take on Ireland at Sixways Stadium, Worcester on Wednesday before ending the festival against France at Kingsholm Stadium, Gloucester.
