On our Community Foundation travels in and around Bath and North East Somerset, we periodically drop in to work with some children in the local special schools. The visits are always great fun and the children revel in the rugby ethos of fun, skills and competition. Pictured here is James Cainey with some of the children at Fosseway School, Radstock at a presentation afternoon where the pupils picked up accreditation for their involvement in the tag programme at the school.

Primary Rugby Partnership

The Primary Rugby Partnership was the very first Community Development Programme set up over five years ago. The project is geared towards teaching the art of tag rugby to both boys and girls in and around the Bath and North East Somerset area.

To date over a thousand children have been involved in the tag sessions in the local schools which then culminates in a huge annual festival day at the Recreation Ground. The project has now even extended to include tag rugby leagues with the finale of these also included on the festival day.

The partnership with Bath and North East Somerset Sport and Active Leisure team and the Bath Rugby Community Foundation is now the cemented in the primary schools calendar.  Included in this years event for the first time was a girls only tag competition which attracted twelve schools and over 120 girls.

Lynda Deane the Active Lifestyles Manager for Bath and North East Somerset Council said “The Primary Rugby Partnership lays the foundation for introducing children to tag rugby and hopefully the enjoyment they experience will lead to a lifetime in sport. The ethos of the partnership is to ensure young people have the chance to participate in what is a fun and enjoyable scheme while in a safe and friendly environment and constantly learning new skills.”

For the fifth year in a row Bath Rugby’s annual Teachers’ TAG Tournament took place at the Recreation Ground in May.

The yearly fun based tournament, that has been a mainstay in the Community Development calendar for the last couple of years, was another massive success Luckily, it was a beautiful evening and The Rec was once again transformed into three mini pitches.

Tim Unwin, Steve Middleton, Jimmy Deane and Simon Rumbles were called in to officiate what can only be called a fairly heated affair!

School Sports Co-ordinator team were the ultimate winners.
