United unable to capitalise on early advantage

Bath United were unable to stop a determined Wasps A from fighting back from a 12 point half time deficit. Tries from Alex Brown and Mark Lilley, as well as a penalty try, was not enough to earn the home side their first Aviva A League win of the season. Final score Bath United 17 London Wasps A 29.

On a damp and cold evening, Wasps started strongly, maintaining possession and working their way up the pitch. A line out deep in United's 22 set an attacking base to play from and it was the boot of ex-Bath player, Ryan Davis that set up the first try. A delicate cross field grubber from Davis was cooly collected by winger Charlie Ingall, who darted over to score. Davis hit the upright with the conversion. 0-5.

United's reply was superb and from the restart, they attacked at the visitors with pace and tenacity. Some great forward play saw them hitting the gain line at pace, and the Wasps defence was sucked in. Quick recycling from scrum half Mark McMillan saw the ball shipped slickly through the backs to winger Alex Brown, who finished a well-executed passage of play. Fly half Paul Roberts narrowly missed the conversion, shaving the outside of the upright. 5-5.

The try seemed to have provided the home side with a huge boost of confidence as they once again came straight back at Wasps with a cohesive team effort. After grinding their way up the pitch, the Blue, Black and Whites found themselves within five metres of the Wasps try line once more. With play all going the attacking side's way, Wasps entered the ruck from an offside position and referee deemed it appropriate for the yellow card, sending scrum half Charlie Davis to the bin. Opting for the line out, the Bath pack sensed a try was on and after a patient handful of phases, keeping it tight with the pick and drive, hooker Mark Lilley powered over from close quarters to take Bath United ahead. 10-5.

Despite the visitors regaining some composure, stringing phases together and replying to United's initial upper hand on the game, the Bath pack began to turn the screw on their opposition and were dominating the scrums. As the home side worked their way nearer to the goal area, seeking that third try, the pack demonstrated their almighty strength in the contact. After Wasps buckled under the pressure three consecutive times, referee Simon Harding had lost patience and awarded Bath the penalty try. Roberts converted, adding the extras as the half time whistle blew. 17-5.

Wasps started the stronger as the game resumed and a piece of individual brilliance from England Under 20's star, Elliot Daly, saw him weave and dance through half a dozen defenders to sprint in under the posts. Davis easily converted to make the score 17-12.

The Londoners really seemed to be finding their feet in the second half and another period of pressure enabled the Wasps backs to find Daly again, who crossed over for his second try of the game. Davis converted. 17-19

Wasps were doing all the scoring so far in the second half, and a turn-around at the contact area witnessed Wasps begin to manage the break down a lot more efficiently. With the forwards providing clean ball, replacement scrum half James Stephenson quickly span the ball wide to Daly who used his footwork to fix his defender and release Ingall, who touched down in the corner. Davis struck the ball well adding the extra two points. 17-26.

Wasps continued to chip away at the home side and some indiscipline allowed Wasps to add another three points to their tally after a good penalty strike from fullback Will Robinson. 17-29.

United fought hard until the end but couldn't muster a reply and as time ticked away, it was too late and Wasps A had recovered from a poor first half to take the game 17-29.
