United overpowered by Quins A

Bath United were overpowered last night by an experienced Harlequins A side, as they fell to a 34-3 loss on a cold night at The Stoop.

On a tough night for the young United side, the game was called to an early finish on 66 minutes after fullback Brad Barnes came off worse in a tackle with Miles Mantella. After a lengthy period of treatment on the field, Barnes got to his feet and walked off the field, but the game was abandoned and Quins had secured their place in the Aviva A League semi-final.

Ross Chisholm opened the scoring on 11 minutes, after a neat chip from Luke Wallace sat up just right for the fullback to score. Rory Clegg failed to find the conversion, but it was an early 5-0 lead for the home side.

The visitors hit back with a period of pressure of their own, as they worked through numerous phases in the Quins 22. The pressure eventually paid off as the Londoners infringed at the breakdown and fly-half Ed Hainsworth stepped up to slot the penalty. 5-3.

United continued to apply pressure on the strong Quins side, but Clegg extended the lead with a successful penalty after a break from winger Sam Smith had brought play into the Bath 22.

37 minutes had gone before Quins managed to break through the Bath defence again, with Chisholm claiming his second of the night after a break in midfield from Clegg. The fly-half half added the extras.

The added another seven points just minutes later, after Smith broke through the line 40 metres out, beat the remaining defence and went in to score under the posts. Clegg again found his aim with the conversions, taking the score to 22-3 at half time.

Quins upped their game in the second half, with the scrum in particular going well. Another break from Smith brought Quins deep into United's 22, and when the winger was held up on the try line, the home side were awarded a 5m scrum. After numerous penalties and resets, the ball was finally shipped to the backs. Max Wilson saw yellow after being judged to have entered a ruck illegally.

Quins' dominance at the following scrum was enough for the referee to award the home side a penalty try to round of a try bonus point. With Clegg adding the extras, Quins lead 29-3 with the hour mark approaching.

The home side were proving too dominant for United, especially at the set piece. Whilst United had the put in at the scrum following a failed scoring attempt by Quins' replacement Mantella, the Quins pack turned the ball over and won a penalty. Chris York picked the ball up from the back of the resulting scrum and crashed over from short distance. 34-3.

Clever kicking from the Quins' backs kept United pinned back, and as Mantella ran at the defence, Barnes stepped up to make the tackle, but was laid out by the impact. The fullback eventually got to his feet and walked off the pitch, but after a long period of medical attention and the temperature plummeting, the referee abandoned the game on 66 minutes. Final Score 34-3.
