Louw returns to captain Bath Rugby in Bordeaux

Fresh from his efforts with the Springboks in the Rugby Championship, openside flanker Francois Louw captains Bath Rugby in their opening Amlin Challenge Cup clash against Bordeaux-Bègles at Stade Chaban-Delmas, kick-off 20.00 (GMT).

In his first match for the Club this season, Louw leads a team showing six changes to the side that started against Sale Sharks last weekend.

In light of injuries in the second row, Matt Garvey moves up from blindside to wear the number four jersey, partnering Will Spencer. Alafoti Fa'osiliva fills the number six spot, while number eight Carl Fearns joins Louw in making his first start for the first team this season. In the front row, Anthony Perenise starts at loosehead, with Ross Batty at hooker and David Wilson at tighthead.

Scrum-half Martin Roberts and fly-half George Ford provide speed and guile at halfback, with Ben Williams and Jonathan Joseph combining in the midfield for the first time this season. The back three of Gavin Henson, Semesa Rokoduguni and Tom Biggs poses an attacking threat from deep.

Second row Ryan Caldwell is among the replacements, having successfully battled back from injuries that have kept him out of action for a lengthy period. He joins returning Pumas Eusebio Guinazu (hooker) and Juan Pablo Orlandi (prop), also newly-returned from the Rugby Championship, who make up the front row substitutes with loosehead Paul James. Will Skuse provides cover in the back row.

The replacement backs include European rugby stalwart Peter Stringer at scrum-half, England U20 Junior World Championship-winning fullback Ollie Devoto and Scotland international fly-half Tom Heathcote.
