Bonus point victory for Bath United

Bath United recorded their first victory of the Aviva A League season with a bonus point 18-22 win over London Wasps A at Henley.

Tries from Semesa Rokoduguni, Alex Brown, and Chris Cook, along with a penalty try and conversion from Ollie Devoto secured the win in an entertaining, close fought game.

Wasps A took an early lead through a penalty from Will Robinson, and as they looked to build pressure they were caught out when wing Rokoduguni intercepted and raced away to score the opening try for United in the corner, 3-5.

The home side hit back soon after, as captain Chris Mayor went over out wide. Robinson added to the conversion to take back the lead, 10-5. They extended the lead again minutes later with another successful penalty from Robinson.

United were pushing hard though, and just before half-time University Scholar Brown latched on to an inch perfect cross field kick from Devoto to touch down and reduce the deficit to just three points at half-time, 13-10.

United were on the front foot from the beginning of the second half, and whilst Sam Vesty couldn't quite find the angle on a penalty attempt, the young side took advantage of a Wasps turnover and worked their way back into the home half.

A series of good phases and good hands from a breakdown five metres out saw Cook go over for the third try, regaining the lead with 50 minutes played.

The power of the United forwards started to tell, with Wasps giving away numerous penalties at scrum time. Whilst Devoto was unable to secure three points at the first attempt, it wasn't long before Bath took advantage of their dominance.

When another penalty went with the visitors at the scrum, the call was made to kick to touch, gaining them a good position deep in the Wasps 22. The lineout led to another scrum, and, when Wasps again felt the pressure, the referee awarded the penalty try. Devoto added the extras, giving United at nine point lead, with 14 minutes to go.

Wasps attacked hard to try and find a way to further their score, but the United defence stood firm, forcing the errors in the Wasps line and taking away Wasps's momentum.

They secured the losing bonus point with the last play of the game, as Jack Wallace bundled over following a lineout, but United had the victory and the bonus point.
