Bath United outclass Somerset with nine try rout

An impressive end to the season saw Bath United score nine tries against Somerset County Senior XV in an entertaining friendly fixture. Final Score 57-0.

The first ten minutes witnessed both sides trading periods of possession but a handful of turnovers and knock-ons prevented any ball baring fruit.

Some slick hands in the backs saw United cross the whitewash first. Centre Jack Cuthbert cut a sharp line and offloaded to Kyle Eastmond, who had timed his run superbly, allowing the fullback to score his first try in Bath colours. Stephen Donald converted well from the touchline. 7-0.

It was another fifteen minutes until another score came, with some dedicated defence from the visitors preventing the dominant home side from extending the score. Despite Somerset's efforts, the combination of a solid pack and quick hands in the backs fed a waiting Cuthbert who took advantage of a two man overlap to score just left of the sticks. Donald slotted his second conversion. 14-0.

The remainder of the half was a slightly scrappy affair with the majority of Somerset possession being squandered through spilt ball and United failing to string enough phases together to score a third try.

Somerset turned down a brace of simple penalty shots at goal, opting to play for a try. Bath's ill-discipline was proving costly, and after the referee had warned them for recurrently killing the ball, Will Skuse was sent to the sin bin on the stroke of half time.

United's third try came courtesy of some strong running from replacement winger Alex Brown minutes into the second half. Another fine display of using the width of the pitch to full effect saw the ball being shipped through the backs' hands to Brown, who took the tackle well and offloaded to a supporting Cuthbert who touched down. Replacement fly-half, Ed Hainsworth, slotted the conversion. 21-0.

A further two tries were added within ten minutes of the second half, whilst United were still a man down. The first was a result of great support in the close play from JJ Kilmartin seeing the winger dive over in the corner, and the second from a powerful and purposeful run through the centre from captain Ben Williams. 33-0.

With 15 minutes left in the half, and after both teams had made a handful of changes from their extended benches, the United pack were rewarded for their physicality as they barged their way over from close range. 38-0.

The re-start provided the next attacking option for United, when a fantastically taken high kick and subsequent break from Tom Baldwin saw the flanker break away towards the uprights. After quick recycling, the ball found its way to Chris Cook who weaved through the defence to celebrate his 21st birthday with a try. Hainsworth converted. 45-0.

As the game entered its closing stages, Brown and Kilmartin added another try each to the score-sheet, capping off an entertaining and fluid rugby contest. Final Score 57-0.
