Bath Rugby defeated by Tigers in last game of season

In a tense match, Bath Rugby battled hard but were unable to overcome Leicester Tigers at Welford Road in the final game of the season, as the home side ran out 28-3 winners.

An early penalty from Toby Flood were the only points of the first half, but there was plenty of action, as both sides looked to try and find a way through two stern defences.

Flood's goal came on the second attempt after the fly-half had missed his first effort, and Olly Barkley had the chance to level the scores shortly after following a nice period of pressure from the visitors, but his shot was just wide.

With ball in hand, Bath built good, steady pressure, and a chip through from Michael Claassens saw a footrace between young winger Olly Woodburn and his Tigers counterpart Alesana Tuilagi. Tuilagi collected the ball, but under pressure from Woodburn was forced into touch. The resulting scrum saw Bath force their way over the line, but were unable to ground the ball.

Tigers piled on the pressure going into the last ten minutes of the half, but some outstanding defence from the visitors ensured they didn't breach the try line, and so the score remained 3-0 at half time.

Leicester came out for the second half and picked up where they had left off – testing a solid Bath defence. Twelvetrees doubled the lead for the home side on 50 minutes, but it was short lived as two minutes later Barkley was able to get the first points on the board for Bath, with a penalty won at the scrum.

The visitors were putting in a huge effort, keeping the Tigers pinned back, but slowly they started to find a way through. A stolen lineout set up the first try for the home side, as the ball was worked across the pitch and back, eventually falling with Anthony Allen to cross over from short range. Twelvetrees added the conversion, and soon after another penalty to extend the score once more. 16-3.

With eight minutes remaining, Leicester were awarded their second, a penalty try, after a series of re-sets at the scrum tested referee Dean Richards's patience. 23-3.

Despite being on the back foot, Bath were still working hard, both at keeping the Tigers at bay, and at trying to build some momentum to take them forward. The Tigers took every sliver of an opportunity presented to them though, and with just a minute left on the clock, Tom Youngs broke to put Horacio Agulla in for the final score of the match. Final Score 28-3.
