Just to see everyone’s faces, as the Bath Rugby and England International stars Matt Banahan and Rob Webber along with Academy player - Tom Baldwin - walked into the Oncology Department at the Royal United Hospital today (20th September) was a delight.
“It’s been fantastic meeting members of the Bath Rugby team and to show them around the department,” said Rachel Bowen, Oncology Consultant. “Clearly we have a lot of terrific staff working here, and a lot of great facilities, but the environment in which the patients are treated clearly could be improved. It has been an ideal opportunity to be able to highlight this. It has also made a big difference to the day for quite a number of people, especially those who are not feeling so well – their day has been brightened considerably.”
At the end of the visit, they handed Rachel complimentary tickets for both staff and patients to the Sale Sharks game on Saturday 29th September, kick off 2.15 pm in September. Signed posters of the latest squad proved to be particularly popular with the staff, many of whom had them personalised.
Thanks go to Sue Tucker, the Development Officer for Forever Friends who is always very pro-active in organising these events.
Rob, Matt and Tom are already looking forward to another visit to the hospital to see how the fundraising and the plans for the new Oncology Unit are progressing. “We are privileged to be able to bring a bit of joy to both staff and patients; these visits are extremely important, and as professional players we believe in being part of our local community,” said Matt.
