Bath Rugby players Guy Mercer, Tom Heathcote and Kane Palma-Newport were at Combe Down RFC recently to take a specialist training session after Combe Down RFC was announced as a winner of the QBE Rugby Pro competition.
Members of the Combe Down RFC trained with the Bath players and community coaches courtesy of QBE, the business insurance specialist. They are one of twelve grassroots rugby clubs across the country to be awarded a training session with three Premiership Rugby players. In addition, the club received £1,000 worth of training equipment.
The prizes were awarded to clubs who best demonstrated the benefits of receiving expert guidance from top Premiership Rugby coaches and players. The judges were particularly impressed by Combe Down RFC's development as an emerging club having only launched mini and junior rugby sides in 2008 and this season have 150 registered players with established teams across under 7's to under 17's age groups. Their enthusiasm and desire to learn and improve from professional rugby coaches and players also shone through in their entry.
The training session provided Combe Down RFC with the rare opportunity to learn from professionals and pick up specialist advice on core rugby skills and game play.
Giles White, Under 16's coach at Combe Down RFC, said: "We are so proud to win this fantastic prize. The school have got a real appetite for the sport and this is a great reward for the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes. It will undoubtedly benefit our players and coaches to train with professionals from Bath Rugby."
Guy Mercer, Bath Rugby flanker, said: "I think that QBE Rugby Pro is a fantastic initiative and it is great to be able to give something back to the grassroots game. It has been fun working with Combe Down RFC and I hope that the access to professional players and coaches during the specialist training today will inspire them further."
QBE Rugby Pro is part of QBE's Coaching Programme, which aims to improve the quality of rugby coaching in England at a grassroots level. For more information on the winning clubs and further details on QBE Rugby Pro visit www.QBErugby.com.
