Bath Rugby rise to Sport Relief challenge
26 February 2010, 3:21 pm
Bath Rugby stars are putting their best foot forward to support Sport Relief and are hoping to encourage lots of Bath residents to sign up and run or walk the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile which takes place on Sunday March 21 in Royal Victoria Park.
Some of the players from the club are hoping to take part themselves as they see it as an excellent way to raise money for charity and get people active that may not normally participate in sport.
The event will raise money for Comic Relief, to help poor and vulnerable people both in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. Councillor Terry Gazzard, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure & Culture (Conservative, Abbey) said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is delighted to support the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief mile. As a Council, we are committed to giving residents the opportunity to get active. The good thing about this event is that people with a range of fitness levels can take part as there are options to run one, three or six miles.” Other local sportspeople such as paralympian Ben Rushgrove have already signed-up to take part and are encouraging more people to do the same. Ben said: "Events like the Sport Relief Mile are great because they help to get more people interested in sport. Although the Sport Relief mile is just for one day, many people who get involved really enjoy it and decide to take part in sport more regularly. "Getting involved in sport has really helped me, it's not just something I do every day, I've built a life around it. There are many positives, as well as getting fitter and healthier, the social side is great too." The event opens at 10am for registration. There are three one-mile events starting at 11am, 12noon and 12.30pm; a three-mile event starting at 11am and a six-mile event starting at 11am. To find out more and to pre-register (which is essential if you want to take part) visit www.sportrelief.com; email info@sportrelief or call 01225 396429.
