| “The defensive performance was very satisfying, particularly for Brad Davis our defence coach. I think that in some respects it is more satisfying at times for the players because they have worked a lot, they have changed their style of defence and worked a lot on it over the course of this year and it’s paid off.
“There are little things that go unnoticed. There was one tackle in either corner that springs directly to mind – Nick Abendanon down in one corner and again with the outside backs in the right-hand corner as we look at the field.”
With an impressive performance under their belt now after the Bristol match and a European semi-final to look forward to, how has Meehan found training this week?
“The enthusiasm has always been there, the spring in their step came the moment the sun reappeared four or five weeks ago. In the week leading into the Bristol game, the preparations that week were excellent. This week it was a little bit different – we had a couple of little knocks and niggles that took some days to get over but we have come off a training session this morning that has been very intense, very well-paced. We’ll go into the match with some confidence, with the knowledge that we can play, which is good. “
With all the euphoria surrounding the last result, things do need to be put in context and it should not be forgotten that Gloucester currently lead the Guinness Premiership and will certainly provide a stern test for the home side on Saturday.
“You won’t get an easy game against Gloucester, that’s why they’re leading the Premiership. They have one competition to concentrate on and they are a club that has always had the potential to do very well in whatever competition they are in so they are a side worth being wary of, a side that you need to concentrate well on and prepare for.
“They play differently to Bristol and I think they have scored more tries on the counterattack in the Premiership than any one else so they are more dangerous from broken play than Bristol are. We are well aware of their strengths and we feel as if we can take advantage of the way they play as well. It’s a question of getting out there and executing things and finishing them off.”
