Bath United Concede Narrow Defeat
20 November 2007, 1:59 pm
Match report by Kate Oram
On a wet winter’s night at the Rec, Bath United fought valiantly to secure another Guinness ‘A’ League win against London Wasps A team, but lost out by five points, with the final whistle resounding to a 23 – 28 defeat.
Plagued by the incessant rain, Bath United had Wasps six points behind with four minutes left before half time.  With a penalty kick successfully planted between the posts after just three minutes by Cozens, Wasps wasted no time in responding and a further three minutes later saw Webber, crashing over near the corner.   Dave Walder added a further two points with a conversion.

Whilst Wasps led 10 – 3 for 10 more minutes, Bath United displayed strong ambition, with the backs enjoying plenty of play.  With Wasps unable to protect their back line, Bath United forced Wasps to offend and two penalty kicks by Cozens took Bath up to one-point behind the visitors.

Four minutes before the half-time whistle, a long chip and chase by centre Scott Simmons, followed through with a try, saw Bath enjoy a six-point lead, which was narrowed to three after a penalty kick by Walder.

Wasps A wasted no time at the restart to equalise, but strong work by Martin Purdy in the line out, passing to Mike Baxter and an offload to Chris Goodman saw Bath go on the offensive and make headway towards the visitors 22.  Wasps struggled to regain the possession, after a chip and chase was intercepted by Baxter, holding off the London side until 51 minutes when Hugo Ellis grounded the ball for a try.

A further five points were won by the visiting team 14 minutes later, but the penalty try awarded five minutes before the final whistle saw Bath nearing a possible victory.  With Adrian Griffiths putting in a good display at the line out and a burst through the yellow and black shirts by Ollie Goss, it looked as though Bath United might be able to claw back.  Mounting a series of strong attacks, the home side forced Wasps to weaken, but their efforts were not quite enough to reclaim the victory and the visitors left the Rec with a final score of 23 - 28.
