He had a spectacular introduction to senior club rugby and scored three tries.
The crowd were on their feet by his third: "Full-back Jim Waterman gave him the ball inside his own 25 and Trick set off on a breathtaking 80 yard run, beating three defenders en route before touching down."
Over all, the home possession tended to be sluggish and slipshod, but Trick made up for all of that with so much promise for his future at Bath. Other tries were scored by Waterman (2) and Davies (2), with Davies converting three and Palmer one.
Rapport with the ‘Flowerpots’
Very much a ‘Rec.’ favorite: if he was not ‘getting much ball,’ he would stick his hands in his pockets and chat with touchline supporters.
5 Tries!
On 7/3/1981 Bath beat Camborne on the Rec by 52 points to nil.- It was David Trick's 50th game and his 5 try performance was nothing short of remarkable. His astonishing changes of pace and speed had Camborne grasping at air. At this stage, the 20 year old had scored 45 tries in 53 games.
Vanishing Trick?
On 9/7/1981 one newspaper carried the rumor that David Trick was contemplating quitting UK rugby and starting a new life in America.
It was reported that he had signed a contract to promote sportswear in the States, South America and Africa and was leaving for New York on the Monday.
Pestered
Trick was chased by Rugby League clubs, including a substantial bid from Oldham.
During that season Trick had represented England Under 23 and toured Argentina. He earned himself the reputation as the fastest winger in the U.K.
Another career highlight was ‘Tricky’s’ opening try in the 1985 Cup Final against London Welsh. (Won 24-15) Upon receiving the ball from Simon Halliday, he beat the opposition with a blistering outside break.
He retired on 23rd November 1991 after 225 1st XV appearances. During his sparkling career he amassed 143 tries, 38 conversions and 13 penalties for a total of 687 points. He played with distinction in four of Bath’s winning cup finals.
Formerly a Stockbroker, he is now an entertaining M/C and after dinner speaker.
